Nutrition Matters

“What do I eat?” is one of the most common questions asked by people living with diabetes.

Eating healthy is a powerful tool in managing both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, but knowing what to eat and when can be challenging.

Contrary to popular belief, living with diabetes doesn't mean you have to be on a 'diet' for the rest of your life, or that you can't enjoy some of your favourite foods from time to time. But making some healthy changes to what you eat and drink could make a huge difference to your diabetes self-management.

Along with other benefits, eating healthy is essential in helping control blood glucose levels, cholesterol and weight, all of which are key to managing diabetes. Eating well also has a direct impact on your mental wellbeing – it helps you feel good and have more energy.

This Diabetes Action Month, Diabetes New Zealand is here to help educate people living with diabetes about a number of nutrition matters including busting food myths and tips for eating healthy. You can tune in to a Facebook Live session with nutrition experts, check out a nutrition podcast or watch our step-by-step video on preparing a diabetes-friendly meal.
